I had a lot of trouble with the LaTeX phases.
You set $TEXINPUTS which, at least in our version, means
that it does not look in the standard places for files
such as article.sty. I suspect you should either supply
these, or, better, not set $TEXINPUTS, and be prepared
to accept occasional ../TexMacs/name
locutions.
