I looked at this - especially 'jam' - but I did not see anything that
really convinced me that any of these are significantly better than
just continuing with (gnu)make and autoconf. I am also rather against
the use of recursive make for the reasons given here:

but I do not consider that an argument against make - just one style
of using make. In any case there are well documented "best practice"
ways of avoiding these problems.
As some people say: Perfection is often the enemy of the "good
enough". Since 'make' is so well known and is good enough, I would
strongly prefer to continue on that path.
